Getting Organized is an Event, not a Routine

Do you feel like you are constantly organizing, or feeling the need to organize? Is it always on your list of things to do?

It is my belief that organizing should be an event, not a routine. If you are constantly feeling the need to organize there are probably a few things going on.

1) You have too much stuff. It is overwhelming and ultimately a losing battle to organize your clutter. Going through your physical possessions and getting rid of what you don’t actually need/want is not an optional step. It is so much easier to intially organize and to keep things organized when you are dealing with less.

2) You were never really organized in the first place. What does it mean to truly be organized? To me, it means that everything has a home and that that home has some structure to support it.

3) You don’t have the routines in place to maintain the organized state. Do you have a routine to put things back into their home on a daily basis? What is your process for getting rid of things?

4) Your needs have changed. Sometimes you have deculttered, properly organized and set up the routines to maintain your organized state and yet you still feel disorganized. LIfe happens and change is constant. There will be times where you need to shift and rework your set up. Figure out what is not going well and how you can improve your set up. The good news is that if you have decluttered and you have already learned the skill or organizing and establishing the routines to maintain organization, reworking your set up to fit your needs now will be a quick process.

If you keep feeling like you need to organize a space, identifying the underlying reason for that feeling will help you move forward.
